Making discipline easy

This week was amazing. But not in the way you think. And not in the way that past Ted would’ve thought either.

In last week’s blog I wrote about momentum vs intensity. This week, I’ve been putting that concept into practice even more, and it’s becoming clearer every day. If I had to sum it all up in one word, it would be efficiency. I was efficient in my riding, efficient in my day to day life, and even efficient in my thoughts.

For the last year or so, I’ve been trying to make it easier for myself to stay disciplined across all areas of my life. It sounds almost stupid at times. Like I’m playing games with myself. But it works. The less willpower I waste on small stuff, the more I have left for the moments that really matter.

Take stretching, for example. I try to stretch every single day. Everyone knows the benefits, but in the new place I’m staying, the wooden floor makes some stretches pretty uncomfortable. I’ll admit, I skipped a couple of days just because of that. So I went and bought a yoga mat. Now it lives in the middle of my room, both a soft surface and a trip hazard reminding me to get it done.

Some people would say I didn’t need the mat. That I should just tough it out on the wooden floor. But here’s the reality. With the mat, I stretch more consistently. And that consistency means I can save my willpower for bigger moments, like in my riding, where it really pays off.

And this isn’t just about the small stuff. The whole move to Sweden is built on the same principle. Sure, I could’ve stayed in Australia and sent tricks straight to dirt or to a sketchy resi. But the risk there is obvious compared to having an airbag or foam pit. Maybe that looks like taking the easy way out. Maybe it doesn’t look “sendy” enough. But if the outcome is that I progress faster and become a better rider... it’s worth it.

The more I write this, the more I realize how far this mindset reaches. It applies to everything. That’s what I love about it. It gives me an actionable way to improve my life. Not just vague slogans like “work harder” or “stretch more.” Real, tangible changes that make the daily decisions easier.

Tiny tweaks. Less wasted willpower. More fuel for the things that matter most.

See ya next week...
